The resolution to end all resolutions
I used to not believe in New Year's resolutions.
True story. I used to refuse to make them, "on principle", I would say. "What's the point of making a resolution at one designated time of the year? Why not just make it when you realize you need to make one?" Fine words for someone who made very few of them!
My birthday is the day before New Year's Eve, aka the day that no one wants to have a party because everyone is already going out the next night. The day before my 38th, I was at home in Winnipeg and had a general physical to talk about the many health issues I'd been having over the past year or more: asthma, constant fatigue, dizziness, back pain, and more. My doctor in Winnipeg is fantastic, always up on the latest research and publications, and he treats me like a person with a brain as well as a body. We had a long talk about my high cortisol and need for a stress leave, my insulin levels, and - the dreaded - my weight. Long story short: I then spent two weeks in a daze of realizing that I, who had not made a New Year's resolution in longer than I could remember, was about to make the biggest one of my life.
And it had to be permanent.
This, above all, was the scariest part: the permanence. It's one thing to cut back on something temporarily, or add something in just for a little while, but the concept of changing my entire lifestyle was really difficult. However, it's four months into this new life of mine now, and I couldn't be happier. This blog is going to be about a wide range of things, from what I've learned about nutrition and healthy eating, to a more-or-less ketogenic way of eating, intermittent fasting, cooking (with photos!), and about the joys of living in good health in general. I'll also talk about weight loss, my personal progress, things I've noticed changing, bariatric surgery (gastric bypass/stomach stapling) and why I decided against it, and a variety of other things, too! Since I started this change, I've had a lot of people start asking for my advice, so this will be a place to share my experiences and what's worked for me so far.
A quick note: I'm completely open to discussing any aspect of this and welcome your questions. That said: the further I've gone into this, the more personal I realize it is. My reflections here are strictly about my own experiences so far and not intended to be taken as instructions to anyone else. That said #2: go ahead and copy any part of it that inspires you, if you like!
